Welcome
Hello and welcome to the book club for members of the
Democracy for Metro Detroit organization. The Book Club serves as an extension
of the work and commitment of the Democracy for Metro Detroit members. We meet
monthly to discuss selected book titles to foster intelligent discussion where
people are free to express their opinions and observations around a particular
topic.
Books are selected from a range of genres including, but
not limited to: political thought, sociology, history, and linguistics.
Typically we read works to promote a progressive, liberal agenda. Occasionally,
we will select works that are in direct contrast to a progressive, liberal
agenda in order to better understand other world views and challenge some of our
own assumptions.
One of our members, Susan C. Hunnicutt, wrote an article on People and Books in the Same World. It shares some thoughts on why books and conversation are so key to what is happening in today's world. Read it if you get a chance as it embodies what this book club is about.

Read
The current month's reading selection can be found on
the Reading List page or at
the Meetup web site. A comprehensive historical list of our reading selections
can be found by selecting the Reading List link found here. A few selected
members' thoughts on a particular read will also be available at this site. So,
if you missed a meeting, you can still see some of your peers thoughts about a
book.
Also, each month this site will provide some alternative "extra
credit" reading materials relating to the selected title. The extra
materials may include links to book reviews, essays, or other online articles
about a particular topic. All of this is provided to foster a great discussion
for when we meet.
Think
What keeps a book club compelling and something you
don't want to miss? It all starts with a quality read that engages your mind,
your philosophy, and your emotions. We try to select books that do all three. It
also takes a diverse group of individuals to foster a good discussion and that
is why this book club is associated with Democracy for Metro Detroit. Its
members come from a variety of experiences, backgrounds, and interests. Our
common ground is simply a desire to affect change in politics and society. This
book club helps to give us the tools and knowledge derived from interesting
topics from some of the most notable authors. It's simple to get in engaged.: Join, Read, and
Think.
